Laura Allums Mitchell is signature member and past president of the Louisiana Watercolor Society. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Arts and a Masters Degree in Education. Retiring from a successful career as a teacher and principal in 1998, she was finally able to pursue her first love of painting. After studying briefly at the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts, Laura was asked to teach classes there. She later held private group lessons to dozens of students in the greater New Orleans area. Her pedagogical expertise and art talent made her the ideal mentor to many budding artists.

Laura is intrigued by the play of light on objects, the reflections created, and the bounce of colors and shapes on their surroundings. She begins her process with a loose background, gradually adding layers to create realistic interpretations of the stories she imagines.

Laura’s paintings have been displayed in many competitions and galleries across the United States and in Greece, Belgium, and France. She earned numerous national and state awards, including the National Watercolor Society Watercolor Artist Magazine Cash Award. Her paintings are in the permanent collection of Jones County Junior College, Ellisville, Mississippi, and the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts, as well as private collections in the United States and Australia.
