Description

Superior Sunset, the award winning watercolor by Betsy to be completed at the workshop

There is such joy in painting nighttime scenes! “The night” brings excitement and emotions and offers so many mysterious images you are forced to paint using rich, dramatic colors. Whether it be the beach, the mountains or a busy urban scene, this workshop will teach you techniques to help you convey your expression of the dark through discussion, demonstration and critique at the day’s end.

Betsy Neely

Betsy Neely with Superior Sunset

Betsy Neely is a Baton Rouge artist who works in watercolor, acrylic and oil painting. She holds a B.S. in Art Education and Master of Fine Arts degree from Louisiana State University.

Her career began as a high school art teacher in her hometown of Alexandria. She moved into graphic design with Goudchaux’s/Maison Blanche department store in Baton Rouge. She retired from LSU AgCenter, where she designed and illustrated publications, posters and exhibits. Betsy does book illustration for LSU Press and other freelance and commission work.

Betsy paints at home and on location, in a loose, naturalist style. She enjoys painting en plein air and takes lots of photographs to work from in the studio. Favorite subjects include Baton Rouge landmarks and houses, the Mississippi River, the food and music culture of New Orleans, and French Quarter architecture. She likes to interpret the light on objects in interior spaces, the lush greens of Louisiana and the bright Florida light. She participates regularly in juried shows and has received awards for her work. She has sold work in Florida, Texas, Louisiana, and many other states.

Betsy teaches private painting and drawing lessons in her home studio. She is a member of the Louisiana Watercolor Society and Baton Rouge Art League.
